Abducted UBTH nurse freed

Southern City News had reported that Rita was whisked away by the gunmen in the presence of her children at Igun-Owina quarters at about 7:45pm last Sunday.

The kidnappers, who reportedly forced her into a Toyota Highlander car, had also demanded a ransom of N10 million before she could be released.

Gunmen kidnap, free lecturer in C’River

A lecturer at the Federal College of Education in Obudu, Cross River State, Dr. Walter Ibe, was on Saturday abducted from his official residence by gunmen.

Ibe, who is in the Department of Computer Science, was whisked to an unknown destination, but Southern City News gathered that the abducted lecturer was released in the early hours of Sunday.

Federal allocation not enough to pay salaries – Ganduje

“What the Kano State government received last month from the Federal Government dropped from N5bn to N2.6bn, which is not enough to pay salaries,” the governor said.

He also said that his administration grappled with dwindling revenue but maintained that it had done everything within its power to stabilise the state’s economy.

The governor said that he was determined to complete all inherited projects as well as initiate new ones.

Katsina youths ask govt to involve then in state activities

YOUTHS in Katsina State on Sunday asked the state government to evolve programmes that would ameliorate their sufferings and allow them to actively participate in the issues concerning the state.

The youths, who belong to the Katsina State Youth Senate, held an inaugural parliamentary session in Katsina, the state capital, where they nominated ‘senators’ from various youths organisations in the state to sponsor motions on the issues concerning youths.

Among the youth organisations whose representatives were at the event were Sir Ahmadu Bello Foundation, Blind Children Intellectual Club, National Youth Council of Nigeria, Arewa Youths Development, Muryar Talakwa, and the Movement for the Restoration of Northern Dignity.

Yobe, most insecure state in North-East – Report

The six states in Nigeria’s North-East include Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Taraba, and Yobe.

 The Livelihoods and Economic Recovery Assessment 2016 report, which was obtained by our correspondent in Abuja, revealed several key findings after an assessment that was conducted by Oxfam Nigeria on behalf of UNDP in the four states of Borno, Adamawa, Gombe, Yobe, eight local government areas, 24 wards.

No fewer than 3,258 households were sampled.

Additional revelations in the report showed that the residents in some of the states were still feeling insecure despite the presence of the Nigerian Armed Forces in the region.

Under its Safety and Social Cohesion section, the UNDP, in its report, said, “Indicators used to measure the level of security were based on the perception of insecurity of the populace surveyed. The assessment indicated that Yobe State was viewed as the most insecure and Adamawa State as the most secure.

 “Women recorded a lower percentage of insecurity distress when compared to men. This trend illustrates that men might feel more unsafe in the LGAs due to the fact that they are the ones most often killed when insurgents attack their communities.”

The UNDP also noted that individuals with illnesses such as asthma, diabetes, cancer, liver cirrhosis, HIV, tuberculosis and others, were present in 23 per cent of the households assessed.

Yobe to build first cargo airport in northern Nigeria

He said the airport, which would be for ticketing as well as for cargo, would be located in Damaturu, the state capital.

He lamented that Yobe was the only state among the 19 northern states of the country without an airport, adding that this informed the decision to build one.

Wakil said that the state government had concluded plans for the award of the contract for the airport.

He said when constructed, the airport would be the first of its kind in the North even as he lamented that there was no cargo airport in the whole of northern Nigeria.

He disclosed that most airports in the north were not commercially viable because they were being run on ticketing, saying that ticketing alone cannot sustain any airport.
